Winter Fashion Trends

Military

Endorsed by Victoria Beckham, Tommy Hilfiger and Ferregamo, the military trend is back, but in a more chic avatar.

Prada’s bright orange pant suit with medallions and Tory Birch’s severe military coat with a surprisingly feminine ethnic peasant dress underneath are whimsical takes on military dressing.

How to Wear It

A double breasted coat with gold buttons and a broad belt to cinch the waist, paired with calf length boots is the ticket to this trend.

Goth

Goth is done like never before. Leather, black, dark make-up and long lengths are the watchwords this year. Bottega Veneta’s  black leather dress with a shiny black bodice and matte skirt bring light and dark into play.

Similarly, Alice and Olivia’s sequined palazzo pants bring sheen to the Goth trend.

How to Wear It

Don’t go overboard, keep it fuss free and balance the dark pieces with some shine. Pair a leather pencil skirt with a slim fit leather tank with a sequin trim. Wear black nail polish but skip the black lipstick!

Leather

Leather makes yet another appearance, but this time in fresh colours like bright ochre dresses and pea soup green trench coats.

YSL’s ruby red leather dress tightly cinched at the waist epitomizes this trend.

How to Wear It

If head to toe leather is not your thing, invest in a bright yellow or orange pair of leather boots!

Fur

Fur is a winter staple and this winter, it is ultra -glamorous and feminine. It’s seen on coats, hats, bags, jackets and as trim on tops and skirts.

Case in point is Dior’s midnight blue belted coat with ¾ sleeves and dyed to match leather gloves.

How to Wear It

If you are a die- hard PETA activist, go in for faux fur, it will be available in a wider range of colours too.

Oversizing

This is the most striking trend of winter. Donna Karan’s empowering oversized coat is sculpted and simple. Oversizing can be found on coats, trousers, and tops.

Comme des Garcon’s pink tent coat is also along the oversized lines.

How to Wear It

Oversizing can be a bit overwhelming if you are petite. If this is the case, use this trend sparingly, in the form of oversized bags, purses and other accessories.

Slim Fit Trousers

Skinny jeans and trousers have been around for some time, but their more grown up avatar makes its presence felt in winter.

Slim Fit Trousers

These trousers are cropped, ankle length and accessorized with ankle booties, flats or masculine loafers and brogues. Helmut Lang’s all white ensemble with black booties is a contrast in colours and silhouettes as well.

How to Wear It

Cropped trousers are flattering to most unless you are very broad hipped.  Pair them with funky footwear to show off their lengths.

Peplums

Peplums have been around for a while but for winter they become darker and classier. They adopt a more formal “cocktail party” feel. Lanvin’s blue skirt suit is a perfect example of the winter peplum trend.

Another versatile way to wear the peplum is to invest in a peplum belt which can instantly add glamour to any outfit. Etro’s leather peplum belt is one such example.

How to Wear It

Peplums are also very flattering. Ensure that the top is well fitted above the peplum section else it will look shabby and awkward. The fabric of the peplum should ideally be a bit stiff so that it has enough body to stand well. Leather suits this purpose well.

Velvet

Velvet brings to mind luxury, vintage inspired looks. This winter, jewel toned velvets; often worn head to toe are scorching the trend reports. Ralph Lauren’s plunging V neck wrap dress is a head to toe velvet vision.

Chic velvet dresses

Victoriana inspired pantsuits in deep reds also espouse the use of velvet this winter.

How to Wear It

Chic velvet dresses in jewel tones are your best bet to wear this trend. Dress it up with accessories in the same colour but a darker or lighter shade for greater impact.

Knits

Luxurious knits like those at Narciso Rodriguez made for a cozy winter. They are well structured and the cable knit is very popular.
