* Required Fields

Our First Flush Darjeeling is a black tea from the Makaibari estate in India. This tea has a bright, sweet taste and a beautiful aroma. An exceptional tea.

GRADE

This tea is graded Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe 1 (FTGFOP1). This shows that it is a high quality whole leaf tea made from the first two leaves and bud of the shoot.

ORIGIN

The Makaibari Tea estate is located at 4500ft near Kurseong, in the Darjeeling District, West Bengal, India. Established in 1859, the 1575 acre world renowned estate is also Darjeeling’s oldest.

The owner, Mr Rajah Banerjee has a pioneering attitude when it comes to growing tea. His organic and Fair Trade certified tea grows on bushes integrated into six tiers of plants, forming a biodynamic ecosystem that enriches the health of the soil. Tea is only grown on a quarter of the land with 70% of the estate under forest cover. This sustainable type of farming benefits the environment as well as ensuring the ongoing quality of the so called ‘Champagne’ of the teas.

THE EXPERIENCE

The tea makes a clear amber liquor. It has a strong floral aroma with subtle muscatel notes (a musky spiciness). The bright, slightly flowery, lemony infusion has a punchy, slightly bitter (astringent) taste and classic First Flush character.
